Ebook About
Long before George Washington was a president or general, he was a sportsman. Born in 1732, he had a physique and aspirations that were tailor made for his age, one in which displays of physical prowess were essential to recognition in society. At six feet two inches and with a penchant for rambunctious horse riding, what he lacked in formal schooling he made up for in physical strength, skill, and ambition. Virginia colonial society rewarded men who were socially adept, strong, graceful, and fair at play. Washington's memorable performances on the hunting field and on the battlefield helped crystallize his contribution to our modern ideas about athleticism and chivalry, even as they also highlight the intimate ties between sports and war. Washington's actions, taken individually and seen by others as the core of his being, helped a young nation bridge the old to the new and the aristocrat to the republican.Author Philip G. Smucker, a fifth-great-grandnephew of George Washington, uses his background as a war correspondent, sports reporter, and amateur equestrian to weave an insightful tale based upon his own travels in the footsteps and hoofprints of Washington as a surveyor, sportsman, and field commander. As often as possible, he saddles up and charges off to see what Washington's woods, byways, and battlefields look like from atop a saddle. Riding with George is "boots-in-stirrups" storytelling that unspools Washington's rise to fame in a never-before-told yarn. It shows how a young Virginian's athleticism and Old World chivalry propelled him to become a model of right action and good manners for a fledgling nation.

Book Riding with George: Sportsmanship & Chivalry in the Making of America's First President Review :

I enjoy history, sportsmanship, foxhunting and horseback riding so this book was right up my alley. The history in regard to George's military career was well done. The history of George's foxhunting and horsemanship was weak. I was looking forward to more details in regard to his foxhunts, hounds and horses and how that stuff effected George. It was interesting and funny that a hunt horn call know as "Gone Away" was blown by the British to humiliate George when he was in retreat. George's membership in Freemasonry was mentioned but not elaborated on. Too bad because becoming a Master Mason was not doubt important in riding with George.I enjoyed the book. The author gives a fair treatment to George in regard his clinging to slavery as well as his fighting for independence and not freedom. The American Revolution was about independence for American nobles like George not independence for the common people or slaves.
Thanks to Mr. Smucker we have a wonderful addition to the books on George Washington. To understand what enabled Washington to become the leader of our nation this book illuminates the role of the many contributing factors. Well written and researched it is enlivened by the author's retracing the steps of a young George Washington by horseback and engaging with numerous scholars, historians, curators and others along his path. Reading this book is a bucket list of all the places I hope to either spend time or look forward to going one day to acquire a greater understanding of not only our first President but the man who defined the office of the President. I really appreciated not just the profile of Washington but the other formative figures in his life and the customs of the age in which he lived. Although familiar with Westmoreland County by land and sea having sailed and driven numerous times to and from DC, Mount Vernon, to the childhood home of Washington as well as the other original colonies I greatly enjoyed revisiting them through this book. I now have to share it with my many friends! Thank you Philip G. Smucker.
